KBDIS is a handy tool that helps us calculate the Keetch-Byram Drought Index, which is super useful for figuring out if an area is running low on moisture. This index helps meteorologists and local authorities assess moisture levels over time, not just in a snapshot. It takes into account both the upper and deeper soil layers to give a clear picture of what's happening.
The KBDI looks at how much moisture has been lost from the soil, helping us understand drought conditions better. It's all about tracking this moisture deficiency throughout the year instead of looking at isolated incidents.
To get started with KBDIS, you need to keep track of your daily data. The cool thing is that it works best with Excel spreadsheets. So, before using the tool, make sure your records are in XLS or XLSX format!
Using the KBDIS is pretty straightforward! Once you've uploaded your spreadsheet, just pick the sheet that has all the daily rainfall records from local meteorology stations. It's like having a weather expert right on your computer!
You'll do your actual calculations in the KBDI Calculator tab. Here, you can choose things like years and measurement units that suit your needs. Plus, if you're a visual learner, you can see the data displayed in graphs! Just hit the Plot2Pic button at the top to save those graphs separately.
