Google Maps, and other similar services, provide users with detailed satellite images of the Earth’s surface, which can have a wide range of uses. However, you will need a specialized utility to download the map tiles and merge them.
Map Stitcher is a small, open-source program that enables you to perform these tasks from an intuitive GUI. It is relatively easy to work with, and it is also fully portable.
The application uses Google Maps as its default image source, but it should also be compatible with other services that use similar APIs, 256x256 map tiles and the Mercator projection. If you only want to download images from Google Maps, you do not need to modify the Base URL field.
In order to download something, simply enter the coordinates of each of the four corners and set the zoom level. A preview will be displayed in the main window, along with information about the number of tiles and resolution.
Once the tiles have been downloaded, you can begin merging them right away. For particularly large maps, it may be a good idea to set the preferred number of stitch threads as well.
Of course, the duration of the job is affected by both the dimensions of the downloaded images and the processing power at your disposal.
One of the advantages of using Map Stitcher is that it does not need to be installed and can be launched from portable storage devices. All the program’s data is stored in the root folder, so nothing will be left behind on the host PC.
If you’re looking for a simple yet effective map downloader for Google Maps and other similar services, this application should be a great choice.
