Windows editions feature several security measures that are meant to prevent hackers from accessing local data. Starting with the release of Windows Vista, a new layer of security was added to local files and folders under the name of Mandatory Integrity Control (MIC).
This new feature basically assigns integrity levels not only to running processes, but also to folders, and it shows users how trustworthy an object is.
Reviewing the integrity status of files can typically be performed only by tech-savvy users, since it implies using a dedicated command-line app.
And this where MicEnum comes in. It is a portable software solution that helps users examine the integrity levels of their folders while also enjoying a neat graphic interface. It basically displays all local folders in a tree, along with their current integrity status.
Another nifty function of this utility is that it can also calculate the integrity levels of registry directories.
This way, one can identify anomalies and potential vulnerabilities when these levels do not match - for instance, when a sub-folder displays a different integrity level than the one of the source directory.
When users are not satisfied with the default results, they can manually scan the registry or the local files with a custom job priority: low, medium, high or system.
MicEnum allows users to organize data in sessions, meaning they can save the information in an XML file that can later be analyzed with specialized software. The XML can also be imported back at a later time.
The application makes it possible for all users to explore the integrity levels of their folders and their registry entries even if they are not PC experts.
