Windows puts a couple of text editors at your disposal by default, one of which supports rich text format, meaning you’re able to customize the font’s visual style. However, there are multiple alternatives which offer greater variety of features, just like Notable, which comes with a navigation panel for quick access to multiple documents.
The application keeps you busy just for a few seconds during the installation process. However, you need to make sure that .NET Framework is installed on your computer for it to run, even though it’s a default feature in modern Windows iterations.
On the visual side of things, the main window poses no accommodation problems whatsoever, especially since it’s only fitted with a horizontally split interface, and the upper menu bar. The first half of the main window provides quick access to all your documents, so you don’t have to open a different file every time you want to go through existing content.
The lower half is where all of your text goes. Note that the first line of every new document serves as the title, which you also notice gets updated in the browser pane. It differentiates itself through the bold attribute, but size is the same as the rest of the text.
In fact, text customization options are limited to attributes like bold, underline, italic, strikethrough, with an additional option to keep text at a fixed width. Although text support is of rich format, you can’t change the font, and not even color to highlight important sections.
Every note can be exported under the RTF file format, or to plain text if you manually change the extension. Unfortunately, files you save can’t be opened afterwards, which means all your work needs to be performed here, unless you use other editors after exporting.
To sum it up, Notable aims to replace, or enhance the default text editors Windows puts at your disposal. However, this task is only halfway done, because even though you can save, and quickly access multiple notes from the built-in navigation pane, there aren’t any export options, while text customization leaves more to be desired.
