Orange Defender aims to provide a virtual shield that can protect your computer against malware of all types. Featuring real-time protection and on-demand scans, Orange Defender promises to prevent viruses and other threats from reaching your system.
Although very colorful, the interface lacks elegance and is quite uninspired, with large tiles and unnecessarily increased font size, all bundled in a window that does not allow resizing. On the bright side, all the options are in plain sight and accessible.
To ensure protection at all times, the antivirus is sent to the system tray once closed and, unlike other similar protection solutions, this one can be closed for good if you wish to.
As such protection solutions usually do, Orange Defender features multiple scanning modes. It can perform quick scans of the system by analyzing key areas that are normally targeted by viruses, as well as full, much more thorough scans to detect deeper infections.
Custom scans are also possible but, annoyingly enough, you cannot select multiple files or folders at once, but only one by one. Orange Defender can analyze the content of removable drives that are connected to your computer.
Thanks to the so-called ‘Live Scanner’, Orange Defender scans running applications and processes in real time, displaying a safety rating for each and letting you know if a process lacks a valid digital signature or features potentially dangerous functions. An extended security report is available online for each process, showing you the hash code, file version, manufacturer, and more.
Orange Defender can ignore certain files or folders from scanning if you include them on the whitelist but, just as before, you cannot add them in batch.
Orange Defender bundles the basic security toolset an antivirus comes with but, unfortunately, it lacks a few advanced features that would qualify it as a goto protection utility. At the moment, its reliability its quite doubtful. The interface could use a makeover, and some of its functions need further improvements.
