Almost every self-respecting website or service requires you to create an account which is secured using a password. However, you brain can only remember so many, and there’s a high chance you either forget an important one, or get your account locked because of too many wrong attempts. Luckily, specialized applications like Red Data Safe want to remember them so you don’t have to.

On the visual side of things, the application keeps things simple so that both beginners and inexperienced individuals get a chance to take advantage of its features. The first time it launches, a prompt appears so you can set a master password. This prevents others from easily accessing all your sensitive information, with a strength slider letting you know how difficult the master password is to crack.

An empty table is brought up once the initial security key is defined. An upper toolbar holds all editing functions you need to work with, such as adding of new items, modifying existing ones, removing, and saving the whole database.

Red Data Safe’s item creation screen only takes a little while to go through. There are only a few fields you need to fill in, such as title, username, password, URL, and other details, if necessary. However, there aren’t any customization options to add pictures, or at least icons to easily differentiate items in the list view.

When not used, the application minimizes to the system tray, so it doesn’t take up precious desktop space. When accessed, you’re asked again for the master password. As a better security method, the settings menu gives you the possibility to choose an action to be taken when three failed attempts are made, such as delaying the prompt for 15 minutes, or erasing the whole database.

All things considered, we can safely state that Red Data Safe comes with good intentions, but doesn’t bring anything new on the market. On the other hand, it keeps things simple and doesn’t occupy any of your time, not attention with unnecessary details. However, it could have used a bit more freedom in customization, or other options to backup or encrypt the database.
