Scrap Garden is an adventure platformer where you take on the role of a small and tin-can-shaped robot and try to find the answers for the current apocalyptic situation by exploring an apparently lifeless robot city.
The game aims to capture your attention through empathy and straight from the beginning some interesting details about a sad and mysterious story will be revealed. It soon becomes quite clear that Scrap Garden’s gameplay will revolve around you having to find out what has happened to the city of robots or whether if anyone has survived or not.
In your first endeavors to escape the scrap yard, you will get acquainted with Canny’s controls, and it is in this stage also, that you will notice the game’s physics.
In its current development stage, it’s fair to say that Scrap Garden could easily use some more development time invested in it, as we have found its gameplay mechanics to be a bit strange and buggy, at times. Nevertheless, these small issues are far from being considered as real deal-breakers, and the game is still quite playable.
Once you escape from the confines of the scrap yard, after a short while, you will find yourself walking down the streets of the deserted city in search for precious answers and slowly uncovering more and more pieces of the puzzle.
The city itself is very well designed with all kinds of sad and memorable robot day-to-day situations inertly frozen in a way that will surely capture your imagination. The game’s overall atmosphere is dominated by a strong sense of loneliness, and the soundtrack emphasizes this fact even more, but, it has to be said, the gameplay isn’t what you would call engaging.
Yes, your imagination is touched a bit while playing this game, and yes, the motivation mostly comes from your empathy towards Canny’s situation, therefore, you should not expect more than a relaxed gameplay from Scrap Garden.
If you are a real platformer genre fan, then you should give Scrap Garden a spin and see if there is more to Canny’s story than meets the eye. Unfortunately, it is quite possible that users who aren’t all that into this specific genre might find Scrap Garden lacking a little bit of salt and pepper.
