Most important functions on your computer, and even changes are reflected through registry entries. These cover every operating system function from visual styles, general behavior to technical manipulation. As an alternative to the default tool, Small Registry Editor wants to help you edit, and save entries.

Note that the application itself doesn’t take any of your time and effort to get it installed on your computer, so you can take it for a spin as soon as download is done. Even though it’s dedicated to modifying registry entries, runtime alone has no impact, and leaves no traces, so you can easily carry it on a thumb drive and safely use on other computers.

The interface is pretty much structured like the classic Registry Editor found in Windows. This makes accommodation a walk in the park if you ever used the default tool. On the one side there’s the key browser showing all hives in a tree list, while selection displays all entries in a separate panel with details like name, type, and data it holds.

For faster navigation, an option can be enabled to expand a key when it’s selected. Be sure to create a backup of entries you want to modify. Luckily, there’s a built-in tool with which to export any key to your computer. Recovery simply means running the file, with it automatically integrated since it’s created under the REG format.

Entries can be classified as favorites for easy access later on. There’s the possibility to create new keys, and entries of different types. Modifying new or existing data is done in a similar manner to the default tool. There’s also the possibility to access the Registry Editor either at a custom location or a fresh instance.

Bottom line is that registry entries need to be carefully managed to prevent serious functionality issues. Small Registry Editor is a lightweight editor in this regard, and even though it doesn’t heavily differ from the Windows Registry Editor, it can be carried around as your personal editor.
