Spectacle Editor is a free and open-source application for both Windows and Mac. It makes creating Spectacle presentations super easy and allows you to save them as PDF files filled with text, images, plots, and source code.
After a quick setup that’s a breeze, you'll find yourself in a clean and friendly interface. At first, it shows an empty project where you can start working right away. It’s kind of like Microsoft PowerPoint! On the left side, there's a vertical strip where you can see each slide (or page) of your presentation. Up at the top, four buttons let you add text, images, plots, or code.
When you're ready to add some text, you have lots of options! You can choose the paragraph style, pick your favorite font type and size, change colors, and even format it with effects like underlining or quotes. Want to make lists? No problem! You can create bullet points or numbered lists and even insert hyperlinks.
You can load images from your computer in various formats like PNG, GIF, JPEG (and others) or even upload them using a URL. Resizing images is simple too—just click and drag the corners!
Now about plots—while you can't create them directly in this program just yet, you can easily embed them from Plot.ly. To view online plots though, you'll need to sign up for a free Plot.ly account. But don’t worry if that sounds like too much; you can also use plots made by others!
If you're looking to add source code to your presentation, it's straightforward! Just type or paste it into a box. You’ll be able to choose the programming language for syntax highlighting from options like C++, JavaScript, Python and more. Plus, you can set the font size and select either light or dark themes for your code box.
You can arrange any object by bringing it forward or sending it back. Change up the background color or even add an image! There are features for adding new slides too—like duplicating existing ones or removing them altogether. If you're feeling fancy during your presentation practice sessions, there are transition options like slide or zoom available without needing to export anything.
I tested this utility on Windows 10 and found that it ran smoothly with minimal impact on performance. Of course, it's still in alpha development mode so some features like deleting objects are missing right now—but overall? It looks really promising!
