The default workspace of a Windows environment is pretty large, and makes it possible to store quite the variety of files and folders for quick launch. However, the desktop can quickly become a crowded space, but you can easily solve this issue by using start_chung in order to create an intuitive launcher for files and programs.
The first thing you notice is that the application requires no setup to function, so you can go ahead and take it for a spin as soon as download is done. This means it’s a neat method of creating a custom launcher for portable apps to use on other computers. What’s more, the target system remains intact, because registry entries are not affected during runtime.
There are no preset programs by default, such as Notepad, Paint, or other default Windows tools to provide example on functionality. All cells are empty, so you need to manually configure the list of items launched this way. However, the application comes with only 24 available slots, with no possibility to increase the number, not even by running a different instance.
Adding items to the list needs to be done through the browse dialog, because dropping them over the main window has no effect. Although the browse dialog is initially oriented towards EXE files, the application supports any kind of file, opening it in its default corresponding program.
The name of the file as well as the icon are detected and displayed in the main window. Removing an item is a simple option found in the context menu. Note that the application closes as soon as you select an item from the list. A method to always have it at hand is to assign a hotkey command to its shortcut to be able to launch it from any location.
Taking everything into consideration, we can state that start_chung is a straightforward method of creating a custom launcher for programs, games, and other kind of files. Sadly, the visual design is a little rough around the edges, and you really need to make an effort to ignore aesthetics to be able to benefit from what it has to offer.
