The PDF format is currently one of the most versatile file formats out there, as it can double as a text document, image file, spreadsheet and more. The problem is that unless you have powerful (and usually purchasable) programs, there's not much you can do to edit it. If merging multiple PDF files into one, or splitting one PDF file into many is what you have in mind, then you can try SysTools PDF Split & Merge as a lightweight alternative.

Calling this app's UI "simple" or "easy-to-use" would be an understatement, as the design is so minimalist and self-explanatory that you'll know exactly how to use it even if it is your first time. The app's interface is divided into two components, depending on what exactly you want to do, either split one large PDF file or merge multiple smaller ones.

If you choose to split one PDF file, all you have to do is provide the program with the location of the source material, then specify whether to divide it by a specific page number, a certain interval of pages, or split it by even or uneven pages. Choosing to merge multiple PDF files is even simpler, as all you need to do is specify the location of the source material and the output file path.

Regardless of what operation you choose, the application will work fast and efficiently, although the processing speed is dependent on the size and contents of the PDf files. For example, large files containing pictures seemed to take longer to process than small, simple ones.

While SysTools PDF Split & Merge may not offer a wide range of tools like other larger PDF-oriented software suites do, the lightweight nature along with the efficiency it shows at what it does makes it great if all your interested in is PDF merging or splitting.
