Using Trello for staying organized brings numerous advantages, but it can also pose logistical challenges to those who wish to attain better interoperability and transfer their Trello data for further use in other, third-party applications. For instance, exporting and using the Trello boards data for subsequent use is not so straightforward, and having the ability to preserve the corresponding data in the process is quite important.

t2md is a command-line-based application that was created in order to offer users a way of efficiently exporting the contents of the JSON files that correspond to their Trello boards. Aside from the actual exporting process, the app will also back up the underlying data and all the uploaded attachments that might be identified.

For the transition to the Markdown format, each of the card descriptors, checklists, comments, and pending attachments are duplicated and in order to maintain traceability and accessibility, all the detected references for the uploaded attachments are automatically replaced with the local relative paths of the Markdown files.

Replacing the references with the local files’ paths is meant at preserving the relevant information extracted from Trello, as well as visualizing it locally and, if required, performing queries on it.
