Computers can accumulate a large amount of excess and unnecessary files that often go unnoticed, they can slow down and impede your system. TinyScan is a Java-based application that performs quick and detailed scans of entire directories, then lists comprehensive results that are easy to navigate.

TinyScan performs its scans very quickly, you will not have any problem scanning entire directories, with little to no time taken. The application presents the information in a very clear, very simple format that shows the key information straight away. It also provides useful information like file type, for those not familiar with file extensions, a file can be listed as a picture, folder or text to make it clearer.

With the information displayed, you will have no difficulty seeing which files are irrelevant, especially with the find duplication function. The application will check any files that appear multiple times to help you find unnecessary ones.

A problem that occurs though is that the TinyScan application offers you no way to delete or move files that are detected, it merely highlights them. This means that taking action based on the results of a scan is not straight forward.

While the application serves as a scanning tool with no file management options after a scan, it does include several useful features that improve its functionality. With the option to automatically save a scan to a file, it means the results can be looked up without having to repeatedly rescan the same directory. The saved scans also somewhat make up for its lack of file management options, you can use the saved scan result while you browse your files to find any problems that showed up during the scan.

The scan can be tailored slightly to skip files and to enable the checksum attached to files, as well as a MySQL option when you automatically save scans. While these features are helpful, they are limited. Scanning for a particular file extension, file type or file name is not possible and those looking for a more refined search will be disappointed.

To summarize, TinyScan is very useful for seeing what exactly is in a directory or folder to a good level of detail. Anything more is sadly beyond the application, and the lack of ability to even delete a file from within the application means you might find it useful, but not useful enough.
