While the English language uses the Latin character set, there are other languages that rely on other alphabets, which makes it even more difficult to learn how to write. Phonetic transcription is the process of writing the spelling of words using another character set. Universal Character Transliteration is one of the applications out there that can give you a helping hand when you need to obtain the transliteration of a text in another language.
Comfortably enough, the application runs in the system tray, patiently waiting for your commands. There is no standard user interface and, while this might be a drawback to some, others might be relieved about getting an application that does not have to be configured in any way. Instead, Universal Character Transliteration runs in the background, so as not to interfere with your work.
To use it, simply find the application’s icon in the system tray area and right-click on it to reveal the main menu. You get a simple list of character sets to choose from and you should pick the one you want to convert a text to. Universal Character Transliteration provides support for Arabic, Armenian, Cyrillic, Japanese Hiragana and Japanese Katakana.
To use Universal Character Transliteration, you just have to select a text, either from a document or file or from a webpage and press the CTRL-M key combination. Unfortunately, this hotkey cannot be modified, so make sure you don’t have it associated to other commands of other software that is running on your computer.
When in an editable document, the selected text is instantly replaced with its transliteration as soon as you press the hotkey. Simultaneously, the transliteration is also copied to the Windows clipboard, allowing you to use it wherever.
Universal Character Transliteration can carry out phonetic transcription of a text section in documents or on webpages, sending the converted text to the clipboard. It is a handy application to those who are keen on learning how to write in languages that use an alphabet other than Latin.
