Many of you are likely familiar with VirusTotal, a website that lets you check files for malware by using multiple scan engines. If you use this service often, you know how handy it would be to upload files quickly and easily. That's where Virus Total Context Menu comes into play!
This small app does one simple thing: it adds a new option right into your context menu. This means you can now upload files to VirusTotal using your default web browser with just a couple of clicks! No need to navigate through the website every time.
You might think apps that add new options to the context menu can be tricky to remove, but not this one! You only need to run the app once to get the context menu option. If you want to take it away later, just run it again—easy peasy!
But hang on! There are some important things to keep in mind. When using this context menu item, remember that files larger than 32MB can't be uploaded for scanning. Plus, VirusTotal's web interface has a limit of 128MB for uploads. And if you're in a hurry, you can only make up to four requests per minute.
An important point is that if you've already uploaded a file before, you can't request another scan on it—even if the last scan was ages ago. Since virus definitions are updated daily, not being able to rescan can be a bit frustrating.
Overall, Virus Total Context Menu is super easy to install and use! It’s great if you're frequently scanning smaller files. Just keep those API restrictions in mind—they might be a deal-breaker for some users.
