Transferring a bunch of photos from your camera delivers them with rather confusing names, or grabbed from EXIF details. However, difficult names can easily be the case with most types of elements inside a file collection. On the other hand, you can rely on specialized applications like VRename to change the name of multiple files at a time.
First of all, the application is not packed inside an installer, which means you can see what it’s all about from the moment download is done. More than that, it’s possible to have it stored on a USB flash drive in case you need to perform a renaming operation on other computers. Registry entries remain intact, so the health status of the target PC is not affected.
The interface doesn’t really pose any accommodation problems, with all features wrapped around a classic window frame. A navigation panel is there to help you easily select the work folder, while a different sections shows all files inside the selected folder. Renaming options are in the same window, but this doesn’t make you feel overwhelmed.
The application can perform renaming of any type of files. It also includes a couple of fields to serve as quick filters, one of which contains a list of preset variables, such as documents, pictures, and more. On the other hand, you have the liberty of setting up your own filters, in case you don’t want to rename all files in the selected folder.
Subdirectories are not taken into consideration, and there’s no option in this regard. Unfortunately, renaming options leave much to be desired, in the sense that you can only change the character casing, and add a prefix. You can look up a custom prefix, and replace it with a different string.
Taking everything into consideration, we can state that VRename isn’t really the advanced renaming tool to help you neatly organize your file collections. The set of renaming options is poor, with no fixed options to enumerate, insert strings in custom locations, and only lets you add a prefix or change character casing.
