WannaSmile is here to help protect your computer from the nasty WannaCry ransomware. This all started back on May 12, 2017, when this virus kicked off what many called a "cyber-apocalypse." Can you believe it spread so quickly? In just 48 hours, over 300,000 computers were infected worldwide!
This ransomware mainly hit older PCs running operating systems that Microsoft no longer supports, like Windows XP, Windows 2003, and Vista. It caused financial havoc for more than 10,000 companies. Security researchers scrambled to track it down and slow it down.
The name says it all—WannaSmile aims to help keep your computer safe from this pesky ransomware. WannaCry (also known as WannaCrypt or WCRY) takes advantage of a vulnerability in Microsoft's SMB service that's usually turned on by default.
You can run WannaSmile by using "setup.exe" and starting the service manually or just run wannasmile.exe with admin rights. What it does is turn off that SMB feature. You could also do this yourself if you want!
This tool uses a special kill-switch found by a guy named MalwareTech to block the malware's spread by adding certain addresses to your Windows "hosts" file.
But hey, let’s be real—it's only a temporary fix! There are already modified versions of WannaCry out there that don't have the kill-switch feature. So while WannaSmile is helpful, it might not work against future versions like WannaCry 2.0.
The best way to stay safe? Update your operating system! If you're still using an older version of Windows, it's time for an upgrade. Also, make sure you've got a good antivirus program installed and scan your PC regularly.
Cautious online behavior is key! While WannaSmile can help prevent WannaCry from getting into your system, it won’t remove any ransomware if you’re already infected.
