What is Whatmask?

Whatmask

Whatmask is a handy little command line tool that helps you manage your network settings. It’s super easy to use and works in two different modes, so you can choose what fits your needs best.

Using Whatmask: The Basics

In the first mode, all you need is a subnet mask as the argument when you start Whatmask. Once you do that, it will echo back the subnet mask in four different formats. Plus, it’ll tell you how many usable addresses are in that range. This is great for quick checks!

Understanding Netmask (Hex)

The netmask (hex) gives you the hexadecimal version of the netmask. This format is commonly used by many ifconfig implementations, making it pretty useful if you're working with various network tools.

Advanced Usage: Second Mode

If you want to get more detailed, just run Whatmask using an IP address within your subnet. Just follow this format: type the IP address, add a slash ('/'), and then put in the subnet mask in any format that suits you. It’s straightforward once you get the hang of it!

Why Use Whatmask?

This tool is perfect for anyone who deals with networks regularly or just needs to check their settings quickly. Whether you're a pro or just starting out, download Whatmask, and make your networking tasks easier!
