Monitors come under different fixed size specifications, and so is your screen resolution configured. Objects on a screen are measured in pixels, and this can help in developing an interface for programs or web pages. What’s more, you can use tools like Window Ruler for even more accuracy.
Needless to say that running the application places a ruler on your desktop. However, it’s in fact a box you can drag around the desktop for better measuring, with a horizontal and vertical side being occupied by rulers. When not used, you can minimize it to the tray area, but there’s no hotkey command to quickly bring it back up.
As mentioned above, you can move the box, and even stretch the ruler borders, either until you leave a single ruler, or to cover up the entire screen. There are also some custom size specifications you can quickly apply, either from the tray area, or from a ruler context menu. Unfortunately, you can’t add your own values to quickly resize to custom specifications.
By default, the application shows everything in pixels, just like your screen is configured, helping you position it and measure elements a bit better, for desktop use. On the other hand, you can change the scale mode to points, inches, centimeters, and millimeters for more variety. In the same menu, the ruler can be made transparent, and to start with Windows, in case this is all you do on a computer.
Last but not least, the application gives you the possibility to capture the region inside the box, with the picture automatically sent to your clipboard. Unfortunately, you can’t set a combination of keys for quick capture, nor force the application to save pictures to file for you.
All things considered, we come to the conclusion that Window Ruler is a practical desktop measuring utility, which can be configured to measure both axis, and stretched as much as needed. You can change measuring units for better understanding, and even grab screenshots for close inspection.
