By default, you are playing against the computer, and you get to effortlessly switch between the integrated chess engines, or choose to load your own. Moreover, you can decide to enable the game analysis mode, but keep in mind that not all chess engines support this function.

XBoard offers you the possibility to save the game, and allows you to load saved games, which means that you can continue the same game at a later time. The integrated CMail function facilitates playing correspondence chess by email.

At the same time, the XBoard software archive also contains launching scripts that will help you connect to 3 Internet Chess Engines: Free Internet Chess Server (FICS), Internet Chess Club (ICC), and HGM, which is a server that provides support for variant chess.

All you have to to is launch the script files by using the Terminal app, and the Xboard game with be automatically connected to the chess servers.
